About Minjeong Kim
Minjeong Kim sees touch as one of the most basic ways people become aware of themselves, and as the sense that connects the body to its surroundings.
Our skin is constantly in contact with the world around us, but as this contact becomes familiar, we stop noticing it. We begin to recognise objects without consciously feeling them. Minjeong understands this exchange between the body and its surroundings as a kind of translation. Just as a phrase can take on different meanings across languages, an experience can change depending on which sense we use to perceive it. Her work disrupts familiar encounters, creating a mismatch between what the eye expects and what the body feels. This mismatch makes the familiar feel strange, drawing our attention back to touch. As the sensation gradually becomes familiar again, it fades from awareness, and the cycle repeats. Her work returns to this movement between familiarity and strangeness, repeatedly renewing our awareness of touch.
